Altitudinal dispersal process drives community assembly of montane small mammals

چکیده
Montane small mammals are subjected to strong forces of dispersal limitation and habitat filtering that mainly operate on their community structures along the altitudinal direction. However, so far little is known about relative contributions niche processes assembly. By applying newly proposed PER-SIMPER/DNCI (dispersal–niche continuum index) framework mammal occurrence data collected from 21 extensive gradients, we quantitatively assessed importance mammalian assembly in a large mountainous region southwestern China. We compared pairwise DNCI values among assemblages low, middle high zones overall between glires insectivores differ abilities test three explicit (altitudinal connectivity, environmental difference ability) hypotheses. The for all species combined (−12.7 ± 0.4, 90 species), (−12.8 0.5, 56 species) (−13.5 1.4, 34 were negative, while showed lower value than glires. For both glires, found low other two pairs zones. Our study indicated an process dominates taxonomic composition this region. Importantly, results reinforced idea less vagile taxa more subject limitation; yet another further areas differentiated by was only supported combined. Community biologists should, therefore, pay attention recent climate-induced upward range shifts montane species, which may dramatically alter different through dynamics immigration mountaintop extinction.

Eusociality but not fossoriality drives longevity in small mammals.
I respond to Williams and Shattuck’s comments regarding the importance of eusociality on the longevity of fossorial species [1]. Williams and Shattuck extend our analysis [2] by compiling further data on fossorial and terrestrial mammals (less than 60 kg) and including eusociality as an additional factor in their analyses. They find that both eusociality and fossoriality are associated with inc...
متن کاملSpatially heterogeneous impact of climate change on small mammals of montane California.
Resurveys of historical collecting localities have revealed range shifts, primarily leading edge expansions, which have been attributed to global warming. However, there have been few spatially replicated community-scale resurveys testing whether species' responses are spatially consistent. Here we repeated early twentieth century surveys of small mammals along elevational gradients in northern...
متن کاملDispersal-Based Microbial Community Assembly Decreases Biogeochemical Function
Ecological mechanisms influence relationships among microbial communities, which in turn impact biogeochemistry. In particular, microbial communities are assembled by deterministic (e.g., selection) and stochastic (e.g., dispersal) processes, and the relative balance of these two process types is hypothesized to alter the influence of microbial communities over biogeochemical function. We used ...
